“Renaissance of the Fishermen’s Village in the Dominican Republic: A Tourist Reconstruction”.
The Fishermen’s Village Fire in Las Terrenas
The town of Las Terrenas on the Samana peninsula in the north-east of the Dominican Republic, a former fishing village turned renowned seaside resort, suffered a tragedy that reduced the famous Fishermen’s Village district to ashes for the second time in 10 years.
Reconstruction of the Fishermen’s Village in the Dominican Republic
Faced with this situation, local authorities and residents, with the help of charitable organizations, reacted swiftly. Together, they drew up an ambitious reconstruction plan. The plan aims to restore and revive the Fishermen’s Village, a key tourist symbol of the town, and to support the victims.
A New Tourism Momentum for Las Terrenas
Today, work is progressing well. New buildings, combining traditional architecture with modern security, are emerging. Access roads are being renovated to provide a pleasant promenade with sea views, and revitalize the local economy.
Inhabitants and visitors alike are eagerly awaiting the reopening of Las Terrenas’ shops, an essential part of the local lifestyle. Restaurants, bars and meeting places will soon breathe new life into the area.
Sustainable initiatives to support the local community
At the same time, economic initiatives are encouraging sustainable practices such as artisanal fishing and community tourism.
